This colouring sheet features the flag of Greece.
The Flag of Greece, officially known as the Galanolefki (meaning "blue and white"), is one of the most recognizable national flags due to its distinctive nine-stripe design and cross.
The flag is composed of two main elements:
Nine Horizontal Stripes: The body of the flag consists of nine alternating horizontal stripes of blue and white, with five blue and four white stripes.
Canton and Cross: In the upper hoist corner (the area closest to the flagpole), there is a square blue canton (a quarter section) bearing a white Greek cross.
The blue and white colors are traditionally associated with Greece:
Blue: Symbolizes the sky and the sea that surrounds the Greek peninsula and islands.
White: Represents the foam of the waves and the purity of the struggle for independence.
The white cross in the canton is a traditional symbol of the Greek Orthodox Church and represents the historical importance of the Christian faith in the nation's identity and its struggles.
While there is no official explanation, the nine stripes are commonly said to correspond to the nine syllables of the Greek national motto during the War of Independence: "Eleftheria i Thanatos" (Freedom or Death). In Greek, this phrase has exactly nine syllables: E-le-fthe-ri-a i Tha-na-tos. They are also sometimes said to symbolize the nine muses of Greek mythology.
