The Flag of Italy

Free

The National Flag of Italy, affectionately known as Il Tricolore, is a striking vertical tricolour. Its bold design is a symbol of national identity, freedom, and the diverse landscape of the Italian peninsula.

Design and Layout

The flag consists of three equal vertical bands of colour:

Left Stripe (Hoist): Vibrant Green.

Middle Stripe: Pure White.

Right Stripe (Fly): Brilliant Red.

There are two popular ways to interpret the colours of the Italian flag—one based on the natural beauty of the country and the other on its historical values.

The Landscape Interpretation:

Green: Represents the lush plains and hills of the Italian countryside.

White: Symbolizes the snow-capped peaks of the Alps and the Apennines.

Red: Represents the blood spilt during the struggles for Italian independence and unification.

The Philosophical Interpretation:

Green: Symbolizes Hope.

White: Symbolizes Faith.

Red: Symbolizes Charity (or Strength).

The Italian tricolour was inspired by the French flag and first appeared in the late 18th century. It was officially adopted by the Cispadane Republic in 1797. After several variations throughout the 19th century and the period of the Kingdom of Italy, the current version without any coats of arms was formally adopted by the Italian Republic in 1948.
