The Flag of Lithuania

Free

The National Flag of Lithuania is a horizontal tricolour consisting of three equal bands of yellow, green, and red. This vibrant combination of colours reflects the nation’s love for its land and its enduring spirit of independence.

The flag is composed of three horizontal stripes:

Top Stripe: Bright Yellow.

Middle Stripe: Rich Green.

Bottom Stripe: Deep Red.

The colours of the Lithuanian flag are closely tied to the country's natural beauty and the character of its people:

Yellow: Represents the sun, prosperity, and the vast fields of ripening grain (wheat) that cover the Lithuanian countryside.

Green: Symbolizes the forests, the beauty of nature, and the themes of hope and liberty.

Red: Represents the blood shed by those who fought for the country, symbolizing courage, bravery, and the people's love for their homeland.

The tricolour was first adopted in 1918 when Lithuania gained its independence following World War I. During the period of Soviet occupation, the flag was banned, but it became a powerful symbol of the independence movement in the late 1980s. It was officially re-adopted in 1989, shortly before Lithuania restored its sovereignty in 1990.

Today, the flag stands as a proud symbol of the Baltic state's rich history and its modern, democratic identity.
