The Flag of Spain, officially known as the Bandera de España, is a horizontal triband of red, yellow, and red.
It is famously known as the Rojigualda (meaning "red-yellow"), a design that dates back to 1785.
The flag features the Spanish Coat of Arms placed on the yellow stripe, shifted slightly towards the hoist (the side where the flag is attached to the pole).
The Coat of Arms symbolizes the history and kingdoms that make up Spain:
Castle (Top-Left) - Kingdom of Castile
Lion (Top-Right) - Kingdom of León
Red & Yellow Stripes (Bottom-Left) - Kingdom of the Crown of Aragon
Chain Mail (Bottom-Right) - Kingdom of Navarre
Pomegranate (Bottom Center) - Kingdom of Granada (the last Moorish kingdom to be reconquered)
Two Pillars (Sides) - The Pillars of Hercules (representing the Strait of Gibraltar). They are topped with crowns (one Imperial, one Royal).
Motto - The scroll around the pillars reads "Plus Ultra" (Latin for "Further Beyond").
